I bought these hand/lever guard protectors about 2 weeks ago now and the installation went very smoothly. I have heated grips on my VStrom and the controller was placed very close to where the inner attachment of the aluminum backbone connects to the handlebars, so it took a bit of finagling to get it to work, but once I had it the rest went very smoothly. The backbones are very strong so it gives me confidence that in the case of an accidental drop while on the trail my clutch and brake levers won't get damaged. The plastic hand guard themselves are great, they are big enough so that my entire hand is protected from wind and road hazards such as rocks, etc... thrown up by cars and trucks. I haven't tried it in cold weather yet, but I anticipate that my hands will be toasty behind the shield and with the heated grips combined. Definitely a great addition to your adventure touring bike and they look great. (Posted on 6/3/2016)

I bought this a month ago and they were back-ordered from Barkbuster. Fortunately, I was in no rush, and it was worth the wait. Twisted Throttle was very communicative about the delay, and even gave me an extra credit.

Installation was fairly painless. I had trouble removing the factory bar-ends. They were secured with bolts that were REALLY tight. I had to get a friend to loosen them with his impact screw-driver. Once bolts were loos, the internal weights weren't too much trouble to remove. I found an installation video on YouTube for an NC700, which has identical handlebar setup to my bike. That person had a lot of trouble getting the internal weights out. So I was worried. But I had no trouble at all. Fitting the new ones on was easy and uneventful.

The Barkbusters look awesome and give a more "adventure" feel to my CB500X. I've experienced no noticeable increase in handlebar vibration. The product works great! We have a lot of bugs in Charleston, especially on warm spring evenings. Now the bugs can commit suicide on my Barkbusters instead of on my knuckles!!! :-)

My only wish is that the company would powder-coat the aluminum spine black. It would look SO MUCH better!!! Barkbusters, if you're reading this down under, at least consider offering an all-black "upgrade". People like me would buy it!!! (Posted on 4/28/2016)

Purchased these to replace the all plastic stock hand guards. Ran into a bit of a fitment issue on the throttle side. The Kaoko cruise control increases the overall length of the handlebar (on that side), such that the inner bracket rides up the bar and makes contact with the brake master cylinder housing. This then severely restricts mounting position, and also causes the backbone to rub against the brake lever near the pivot end. However, this can be remedied by adding a spacer between the backbone and inner bracket (see photos). A longer screw is recommended.
The Kaoko cruise control installed on my DL was meant to be used with the OEM guards, and therefore, not compatible with the Barkbusters. After some experimentation, I concluded that by cutting off just the 45 degree part of the Kaoko shaft (the part inside the handlebar), the Barkbuster expanding plug could be used, although with a longer bolt. A welcome fix, as I did not want to pay for another Kaoko (they're expensive).
I am convinced the aluminium backbone will add valuable protection against impact. The plastic parts, I fear, will not do so well in a spill. I do not see how 3 small screws (set in plastic) will survive a fall. Luckily (or not), replacements can be purchased.
I think this is a useful upgrade, and recommend it. (Posted on 4/11/2016)

I first bought the Kaoko throttle lock that was made to go with Barkbusters. I quickly discovered that you cannot install the Kaoko without the BB's. When the BB's came in, I wrestled with my Honda NC700X to get the handlebar inserts out, what a chore, but no fault of the BB's or Kaoko. I have a GPS, clock, Cell Phone holder on the handlebar and feared that the BB's bracket would not work, but happily, to my surprise, there was enough leeway to get everything in place! The BB's and the Kaoko now work outstanding! (Posted on 4/7/2016)

After extensive research I bought these guards to reduce the cold wind of winter months. Many reviews warned of the time it took to install. Although installation did take a while as others experienced, the installation was rather smooth. The right guard is a tight fit but is installed just where it needs to be. In the end they look like an OEM part and function perfectly. Highly recommended for any bike! (Posted on 12/1/2015)

I kit was very well laid out and the instructions easy to understand. The hardest part was getting the old vibration dampners out of my handlebars so I could install the barkbuster ones. Fit and finish excellent and they really cover the tops of my hands well. An excellent purchase for my Honda CB 500 X! (Posted on 8/29/2015)

These are significantly sturdier than the cheapo V-strom guards I had on my Gladius. I was on the fence about spending this much cash on handguards, but after seeing how solid they are, I have no regrets. I was able to use the OEM handlebar internals and the bolt just gets enough thread in there to work. Only downer at the moment is I can't go quite lock-to-lock with a MRA Vario touring screen on. It's close, but does smack the shield. (Posted on 6/7/2015)

I purchased these hand guards when my fingers started going numb on my commute each day. I bought a pair of Icon Patrol gloves with liners which worked well, but the wind chill was still getting to me after about 20 minutes of riding at an average of 30 mph at anything below 50F.

These guards have excellent coverage, I was a bit concerned that they would direct air at my body, but this does not seem to be the case. My fingers still get cold, but it takes longer, and in all fairness, I am wearing a Joe Rocket Phoenix Jacket with the WP liner and a Thermal layer, but my core is still getting pretty cold so a lot of it is reduced circulation. I believe I am going to add heated grips in the next few weeks to see if that will help any. I will add that I have noticed a huge improvement while using my Icon 29er mesh gloves. I can wear these in the 60's without issue now which is wonderful as they are a lighter glove with much more feel than my other gloves.

Installation was very straight forward with the exception of the l shaped bar that goes from the backbone to the handle bar. (2013 Vstrom 650) I was getting very frustrated with the bracket because the head of one of the bolts is in an awkward place. The brake line connector fits right into the crook of the L bracket, and is directly over the head of one of the bolts. It didn't want to go at first and I tried all kinds of things like mounting it upside down and what not until I realized that I could just loosen the whole brake assembly, tighten the bolts and then put the brake back where it needs to go, there was plenty of room after the bolt was tightened. I had no issues on the clutch side.

Also, the SW-Motech Center stand made leveling the handgaurds much easier. (Posted on 12/2/2014)

I added these on a 2014 Suz DL650 Adventure. The installation instructions were excellent. The metalwork and fit up was very good. The only problem is the Storm plastics. They don't fit up tight. One screw on one side and a plastic clamp over the bar on the other side. I would recommend these bars, but with different plastics. (Posted on 11/11/2014)

I put these on to protect my levers all the time and add the Storm cover to keep my hands warmer in winter. I had an off road incident, the Barkbusters took a hit with no damage to them or the 650 V Strom. Pay special attention to pictures of how they mount. The little elbows from the handle bar brackets and the lever protector are not marked left or right and there are several ways to put them on wrong. (Posted on 10/30/2014)

A little tricky to fit on 2014 VStrom 650. Perfect coverage. Peter A from support chatted with me and helped with both before purchase and after when I ran into trouble installing. Shipping was super quick! All around awesome experience. (Posted on 10/21/2014)

A great addition to my 500X! Received them in a timely manner and installed them that weekend. They came with adequate instructions and though not difficult to install, took a little while. Most of the work was removing the OEM bar weights. I have factory heated grips and the pad they use covers up the little hole you need to depress on the clutch side to release it. I had to make a make-do puller out of the new bar weight to pull it out. No biggee, just took a bit of think time. Went together easy. My only gripes are: A) the aluminum parts are raw. It would be really nice if they were black (or colored) anodized. I'm anticipating them to start getting oxidized and crusty. I'm considering removing and either anodizing or powder coating, B) The bar weights that go in the bar could be heavier. The handlebar vibration increased a bit, but not bad. This is good product. I have ridden in the rain many time since installing and my gloves stay relatively dry. Can't say anything about cold weather since it has not been cold yet. (Posted on 10/15/2014)

These were a fairly easy install, other then having to clean all the buildup out of the handlebar to get the flared plug into it. The instructions said to mount the aluminum horizontal but on my 2007 V-Strom 650 the nearer mounting bracket interfered with my brake reservoir so they're a little lower then level. Still work great though. (Posted on 9/11/2014)

These have already saved my 2007 vstrom from an embarrasing tip over in a grocery store parking lot. Previously I had the suzuki OEM handguards and they were very flimsy. Have shown these to a few fellow riders and they sell themsleves in terms of security, safety, and comfort. (Posted on 7/16/2014)
