Constructed of a 4mm-thick aluminum base plate and 3mm-thick side plates for heavy-duty, light-weight protection. Where the base plates and side plates overlap, it forms a riveted 7mm-thick rail for extra rigidity. Base plate includes side protectors that wrap around the engine block to provide both bottom and side protection.
In late summer 2010, we had a very successful skidplate test with an adventure rider sponsored by Honda Canada named Patrick Trahan. Patrick lofted his Varadero's front wheel and came down on a log at speed, high centering the bike on the skidplate. No damage to the bike. When he (accidentally?) did a similar maneuver in a competition before he had our skidplate, he punched a hole in the engine case. Ugh. We're not suggesting you try this test at home kids; no skidplate can protect you from ALL damage ALL the time, but we know our skidplate adds substantial protection to a very vulnerable spot on this bike.Smiles,
